Hospices

A calm first voice for every out-of-hours call.

Hettie answers family and carer calls to your hospice at night and at weekends, writes them up for the morning and sends anything serious straight to your on-call clinician. It never gives clinical advice.

Why the night is hard

The phone rings when the team is smallest.

Out-of-hours calls to palliative care services come from people who are frightened, and the staff answering them are often working with little support.

Staff feel the strain.

A national survey of specialist palliative care out-of-hours telephone advice heard from 78 clinical staff and 23 managers. Symptom management was the most common call, at 97%. Of the staff, 73% had no specific training in giving advice by phone and 44% felt ill equipped. Source: Coffey et al., BMJ Supportive & Palliative Care, 2024.

Place of death matters to families.

In an ESRI-published study, preferred and actual place of death matched in 51% of cases, and people who lived alone were less likely to die at home. The data were collected in 2011 to 2015, so the figures are indicative. Source: Smith et al., Journal of Palliative Care, 2024.

Humans stay in the loop.

The HSE's AI strategy for healthcare, launched in March 2026, includes a human in the loop principle. Hettie routes and records. Your clinicians decide. Source: HSE AI strategy 2026 to 2030.

A first layer that answers in the hospice's name, says it is an automated assistant, records who is ringing about whom and why, and puts a clinician on the line when your rules say so can take pressure off the people at the other end. It gives no advice on symptoms or medication. Our article on handling family calls overnight explains what a non-clinical first layer can safely do, and our comparison of answering services, rotas and AI voice sets out the limits of each option.

How it works

Three steps, no integration.

  1. Your out-of-hours line forwards to Hettie.

No integration and no new phone system. Hettie answers in your hospice's name and says it is an automated assistant.

  2. Hettie listens and records.

It asks who is ringing, who the call is about and what has happened, and writes it up. It gives no clinical advice. In an emergency it tells the caller to ring 112 or 999.

  3. Your rules decide who is woken.

A call that matches your urgent rules transfers live to your on-call clinician, and Hettie tries the next person on your rota if nobody answers. Everything else is in your morning summary.

What your agency sees

The night, read in a few minutes at handover.

Overnight calls log

Every call has a time, a caller, a reason and an outcome. Your team reads the night at handover, sees which calls were transferred live and which wait for a follow-up, and can open any transcript.

Your on-call clinician only hears the calls that need them.
